Trailer Music Videos: Les Mis & other examples

Trailer Music Videos (TMV‘s) are Trailers or Teasers that use a single piece of music throughout the trailer. A great and moving example is Anne Hathaway’s rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” in this TMV for Les Miserables. Masterfully done by Seismic Productions for Universal.

And the classic Lana Del Rey crooning “Once Upon a Dream” for Maleficient put together by Open Road Entertainment for Disney.

and of course .. Lordes cover of the Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” at the end of the Dracula Untold “Rule” Trailer cut by AV Squad for Universal.

Auditory recall is one of the most powerful tools in a trailer editors arsenal and it is super sticky to our brains. Also for a musician to land such a lucrative deal is great too. I am sure Lana Del Rey and Lordes got a lot of downloads after these trailers ran .. in fact the details about the song are on a title card at the end of the trailer.

The Dracula Untold “Rule” is not a true TMV but it is the stickiest part of the whole trailer. Another great example of a song being the featured item at the end of a trailer … check out the Equalizer featuring Detroit’s favorite son Eminem and Sia. The combo of Eminem/Sia for the Equalizer makes this trailer super sticky. I am one of the many thousands of consumers who downloaded the song after seeing this trailer.
