Dune: Sat. Sept. 25, 2021 #NYFF 59

The 59th Annual New York Film Festival opened last night here in Manhattan. It was great to see people out and about. Looks like Dune is one of the big films at this years #NYFF.  When you hear the Pink Floyd song paired up with this trailer .. you think wow, there could be a wrinkle in time … watch

Meaning what a perfect song for this trailer … “Eclipse” released in 1973 by Pink Floyd … predates this trailer by 47 years!!!! Granted Frank Herberts book “Dune” came out in 1965 and is considered one of the most influential sci-fi books of all time and was part of the zeitgeist of the era when the Dark Side Of the Moon was conceived.

Full disclosure, I have not read the book and although I love science fiction, I mean LOVE, I probably will never get to it … just being honest … unless someone can convince me otherwise. I am an avid reader but there are many books in front of it … many classics amongst them … that I have to get to first. Don’t tell Mrs. Fitzsimmons (11th grade AP English) that I never read “Moby Dick” either. But someone day Melville and I will have our sit down together … looking to be a little later in life is all and maybe Frank Herbert and I will have that sit down as well – time will tell.

My point is that Pink Floyd & Company probably were influenced by Dune, AND what a perfect marriage of site & sound in the year 2021 all thanks to the amazing talent of Nick Temple’s team at Wild Card and cut by the amazing editor Tim Zimmer.

The well placed title graphics: “Beyond Fear … Destiny Awaits” seems like a wake up call from the last couple years along with the voice over from Timothee Chalamet character Paul Altriedes: “When the fear is gone, only I will remain”. The full quote from the book is worth writing below:

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I may not be able to read the book anytime soon but the movie is closer (5 blocks away) on the horizon. It feels like the way the new “Mad Max” feels … like technology and vision have finally caught up with each other for them to make these movies! And Dune (A Large Book) feels like a film definitely for the big screen! This trailer is definitely for the large screen too (with @Dolby Atmos Sound to boot). I may stop by the local @AMC to check out a fresh crop of big screen trailers!! What a lovely Saturday that will be!

Also the timing of the release of this film is interesting with the mask wearing and lines like:

“You have proven you can rule yourself” … that would take a lifetime of discipline that frankly this planet lacks myself included whatever … just ….

Enjoy!
