We start with The Blair Witch Project. The Blair Witch Project is a pivotal film that plays a large part in the resurgence of the horror genre. It was a low budget super block buster in it’s time and put horror films back on the map.
It was also a resurgence of the ‘found footage’ genre and amazingly BWP elegantly crossed from horror film afficiandos into the main stream. Everyone was talking about and going to see this film. It started with the marketing campaign and great ol’ fashioned word of mouth – “is it real or is it a work of fiction?” Before the days of 24 minute news cycles, you could tease out a campaign like this. The ‘based on a true story’ (also brought back by these filmmakers) lead to the confusion of what was ‘real’ and what was ‘made up’. Lines were heavily blurred in the days pre-google and that made it even more fun. So we are proud to have the Blair Witch Project kick off the countdown of the season:
Such a simple simple teaser done by Jon Epstein for Artisan Entertainment. It was a mega block buster success … its costs to profit ratio is still legendary!
And since that was only a teaser, albeit a great one, and it leaves the viewer wanting more! We just want to throw on a fun trailer that is pitch perfect for the horror/comedy genre/zone … it takes all the cliches and turns them on their ear … Tucker & Dave vs. Evil:
A great … sometimes lost line in the trailer … “All your good looking friends are here” … why are all the main characters so good looking in these films? … spot on line!! Why did we put up a horror/comedy??? ..well, it’s still September! the purist ‘horror’ starts tomorrow on October 1st (stay tuned there will be some gems). And frankly this Magnet trailer done by AV Squad just makes us laugh … Let us know some of your favorite Horror Trailers – we love to hear from you all!
Also Shanah Tova! (Happy New Year!) to our friends who are celebrating the big 5780 tonight! Love, DT
